Over the last two years, the Municipality of Famalicão has provided more than 300 free psychological consultations to cancer patients and their immediate families. The measure is the result of a protocol established at the end of 2023 between the local authority and the Northern Regional Centre of the Portuguese League against Cancer and has enabled patients and their families not to face the challenges inherent in the cancer journey alone.
‘It is a safe and trusting space where patients can express their doubts, fears and vulnerabilities, with the support of professionals who help them understand and manage the emotions associated with the disease,’ says Flávia Sousa, psychologist at the Psycho-Oncology Unit of the Portuguese League Against Cancer - Northern Regional Centre.
Psycho-Oncology recognises the need for psychological care, in addition to essential medical care, at the onset and progression of the disease.
‘Consultations are important at all stages of the cancer journey,’ explains the psychologist in charge. ‘The main objective is to promote adaptation to the disease and improve the quality of life of patients and their families,’ she concludes.
The support, intended for anyone experiencing psycho-emotional difficulties at any stage of the disease, including in situations of grief, involves managing emotions, fears and concerns, helping to make informed decisions throughout the treatment process, and managing stress, anxiety and depression.
Consultations take place at the Municipal Health Services, in the Town Hall, and appointments must be made by telephone on 252 320 900 or by email at saude@famalicao.pt.
It should be remembered that cancer is one of the most common diseases in Portugal and has significant physical, psychological and social implications. The month of October is dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, and today, 30 October, is National Breast Cancer Prevention Day.
