The rhythm of ballroom dancing is returning to Vila Nova de Famalicão on 8 November. Famalicão Dança, now in its 11th edition, is once again bringing the best national and international dancers to Camilo's homeland.
Organised by Academia Gindança, with the support of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, the event that put the municipality on the world map of dance sport promises new features. ‘Year after year, we have managed to raise the bar, and this year will be no exception,’ says Anabela Gomes, chair of the board, without wanting to reveal the surprises in store for this edition, but emphasising the event's connection to Famalicão's cultural heritage.
Anabela explained that, when creating the Famalicão Dança logo, care was taken to incorporate ‘a cultural and historical element of the municipality’ - in this case, an allusion to the writer Camilo Castelo Branco, through the design of the top hat on which the dancers dance. ‘In 2025, we will celebrate the bicentenary of his birth, and we wanted to highlight this link to the novelist, combining dance with literature and the cultural heritage of our municipality,’ as an authentic literary choreography.
This year's edition includes the organisation of the Under-21 World Championship in 10 Dances - an official competition awarded by the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) - an open competition that will bring together national champions from various countries in Famalicão and includes five Latin dances and five standard dances, with participants from all continents. So far, around 25 pairs from 17 countries have registered.
‘Famalicão Dança is a showcase of talent, bringing the best national and international athletes in the sport to Vila Nova de Famalicão,’ says Pedro Oliveira, councillor for the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão.
‘We will welcome the best pairs in the under-21 category, so, as has been the case in the past, we know it will be a high-quality competitive event,’ said the councillor, adding that ‘the decision to award Gindança the organisation of an international competition is no coincidence. It is due to its competence and track record in the sport, which make it an excellent partner.’
As in previous editions, Famalicão Dança will once again host the 6th and final round of the National Dance Sport Circuit, in Latin and standard, awarded by the Portuguese Dance Sport Federation (FPDD). The competition will feature around 150 couples from all over the country and will be decisive for the final rankings and the selection of athletes for the 2026 national team.
The president of the FPDD, Marina Rodrigues, highlights the ‘professionalism and proven track record’ of Gindança in terms of its ability and quality in organising high-level sports competitions, reinforcing the confidence of both the national and international federations in the work of the Famalicão association. ‘We want visitors to our country to be impressed and to feel welcome,’ she stresses.
It should be noted that the official presentation of the 11th edition of Famalicão Dança took place on Tuesday, 28 October, at Casa dos Caseiros da Casa de Camilo, in Seide S. Miguel, in the presence of the media and institutional partners.
Tickets for Famalicão Dança 2025 can now be booked through the event's official website (www.famalicaodanca.com), where further information about this sporting initiative is also available.
