In Vila Nova de Famalicão, the night of Thursday 12th June is lit up and filled with brightness, colour and joy with the Marchas Antoninas.
With smiles, music, choreography and lots of entertainment, the streets of the city come alive and provide one of the biggest and most participated moments of the grandiose Antonine Festivities that run until the 13th, Friday.
This year, under the theme ‘Camilo Castelo Branco in Vila Nova de Famalicão’, as part of the celebrations for the bicentenary of the writer's birth, there are nine marches that promise to make the night of Santo António unforgettable: Associação Recreativa e Cultural de Antas; Associação Unidos de Avidos; Associação Recreativa e Cultural Flor do Monte; Associação Coração Vale S. Cosme; Associação Coração Vale S. Cosme; Associação Recreativa e Cultural Flor do Monte. Cosme; Associação Cultural Recreativa São Pedro de Riba D'Ave; LACS, Associação Cultural São Salvador da Lagoa; Associação Cultural e Desportiva de S. Martinho de Brufe; Associação Sentir a Terra and Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários Famalicenses.
The Marches start parading at 21h15 on Avenida de França, next to the Municipal Pavilion, and continue through the streets of the city centre towards the Paços do Concelho, where each one will perform.
The jury is made up of five members - a choreographer, a director/designer, a writer, a conductor and a costume designer - who will assess the ‘Best Music’, ‘Best Lyrics’, ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Wardrobe’, ‘Best Bows’ and ‘Most Popular March’.
For the mayor, ‘this is a night of joy and excitement in our city’. Mário Passos believes that the Marches are a ‘differentiating element of the Antonine Festivities’ and that this is also why the municipality has invested in their valorisation, encouraging creativity and the participation of local associations. ‘It's a moment of great pride that brings months of work to the streets and I'm sure we'll have a great night again this year,’ said the mayor, inviting all Famalicenses to experience “another great night of Marches”.
