Futebol Clube Brufense has returned to its home, Campo de Lagarinhos, now called the D. Jorge Ortiga Training Centre, in honour of the Archbishop Emeritus of Braga. The club, whose foundation dates back to 1957, resumed activity in 2018, only with sports training at youth level and with the support of the City Council completed the works on the sports park, which were inaugurated this Saturday, 7 June.
The moment was attended by the mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Mário Passos, and the Archbishop Emeritus of Braga, Jorge Ortiga, a citizen of the parish.
The works transformed the sports ground, with the laying of a synthetic pitch, the restoration of the changing rooms and new lighting.
"I'm very pleased to see the club returning home, a space that was abandoned and which, with the efforts of this board and the town hall, has been restored and will contribute to the sports training of many young people," emphasised Mário Passos.
The club's tribute to the Archbishop Emeritus of Braga, Jorge Ortiga, made him happy. "I love everything that comes from Brufe. This is where I spent part of my childhood and I'm honoured to see my name associated with this project, especially aimed at young people, at sport, which is also a school of humanity."
The club has been inactive for around 20 years, but with the management led by Sérgio Pereira it now welcomes around 150 youngsters in the different training groups. ‘It's very important for us to have these conditions, which allow us to develop our sports project, which is all geared towards training, with better conditions,’ he said.
The work on the now renovated D. Jorge Ortiga Training Centre received municipal support of around 200,000 euros.
