Vaudeville’s contemporary circus is back to Famalicão
22-06-2022
The programme for the eighth edition of the International Vaudeville Rendez-Vous Festival, promoted by Teatro da Didascália, is already known. Between the 18th and 23rd of July, there will be 11 shows - five national premieres, two co-productions and seven international shows - that will "inhabit" the public space of the four cities that compose the Cultural Quadrilateral - Vila Nova de Famalicão, Barcelos, Braga and Guimarães.
The programmatic proposals also include four creative workshops - aimed at specific audiences of each city -, a master class for students, professionals or simply curious about the performing arts, and a pitching session.
This year's edition of the international festival focused on contemporary circus programming has as its main objective to reflect on the great stage that hosts its creations: the public space.
The 2022 edition is thus marked by the recovery of the open relationship with this space and the promotion of itinerancy through the different cities involved, which seeks to surprise with "the different look that others have of the territory we daily inhabit".
At the presentation of the festival, which took place this Wednesday, June 22, at the Tibães Monastery, in Braga, the councillor for Culture of the City Council of Famalicão, Pedro Oliveira, highlighted Vila Nova de Famalicão's "strong connection to circus arts", praising the umbilical connection of the municipality to Vaudeville, which had its first edition in Famalicão, in 2014, and the presence of INAC in the territory.
The mayor also pointed Vaudeville and its inter-municipal dimension as a good example of the convergence between the four cities of the Quadrilateral.
Festival welcomes French, Spanish and Austrian premieres
France, Spain and Austria are some of the countries that will premiere their creations in Portugal. Taking as its motto the free cohabitation of the streets which make up the Cultural Quadrilateral, the show Kilometer 97,1, by the French company Collectif Protocole, invites the audience to wander, not only through the urban space of the cities, but also through the paths, shortcuts and alleys which connect the different centres. In this creation, it will be possible to "taste" the different spaces and the "invisible and hidden poetry of the places", through improvisational juggling. Kilometer 97,1 will have its premiere on July 20, at 19h00, in Barcelos (meeting point is Praceta Francisco Sá Carneiro). The following day, July 21, the show travels to the city of Braga, departing from the fountain at Praça da República, at 10 pm. On July 22, at 22h00, the meeting point will be the entrance of Paço dos Duques, in Guimarães. The show also has a presentation on July 23, at 19h00, at the Amphitheatre - Devesa Park, in Famalicão.
Also from France, comes to the "stage" of Vaudeville Rendez-Vous the creation of Julien Scholl and Jérôme Pont, from the company CIA Jupon: Ensemble. The show, which has the Chinese pole at the centre of its action, presents a game between two people who find themselves in a "delicate, unstable and necessary" point of balance. The show can be seen at 22h00, on July 21 at Largo Condessa do Juncal, in Guimarães, and on July 22 at Praceta Francisco Sá Carneiro, in Barcelos, and on July 23 at Rossio da Sé, in Braga. Still in the French universe, D. Maria II Square, in Famalicão, will host, at 22h00, the premiere of The Good Place, a creation of the company MCDF - Marcel et ses Drôles de Femmes, which brings to the stage a horizontal organisation, composed of biologists, politicians, naturists and experts at the service of humanity, who will make everyone question if "obscenity is really hidden where we expect it?” The performance will also have a presentation on July 23, at 22h00, at Largo da Oliveira, in Guimarães.
Another highlight is the premiere of the improbable and eccentric show, MDR - mort de riure, by the Catalan company Los Galindos. In this absurd comedy of clowns, Melon, Rossinyol and Mardi will comment, with humour, on the public's daily life, promising to make everyone laugh at their own tragedy. The itinerant show that questions the arbitrariness of justice will be on stage on July 21, 22 and 23, at 22h00, having as meeting point the Praça D. Maria II, in Famalicão, Rua Dom Gonçalo Pereira (next to Rossio da Sé), in Braga, and Praceta Francisco Sá Carneiro, in Barcelos, respectively. The Frame, a show that brings together the Spanish and Austrian geographies, proposes to settle in front of the life of the passing city. The show - which will cross the ordinary, the trivial and the general to discover the extraordinary, the special and the unique - will take off on July 21, at 19h00, from the Largo da Porta Nova, in Barcelos; on July 22, also at 19h00, from the Praça Municipal, in Braga; and, finally, on July 23, at the same time, from the Praça de Santiago, in Guimarães.
Co-productions reinforce the Festival's commitment to support creation
The eighth edition of the Vaudeville Rendez-Vous Festival reinforces the focus on creation, "fundamental for the progressive structuring and sustainability in the circus area in Portugal". The 2022 edition will thus count on the presentation of two co-productions. From iron to rust, a creation by Alan Sencades, invites to a reflection on changes and memories, distortions and adaptations. The creation, which includes live music by Bárbara Lopes, can be seen on July 21, at 19h00, at Parque da Juventude, in Famalicão. It will also pass through Largo de Donães, in Guimarães, on July 22, at 19h00, and on the July 23, at 11h00, at Largo da Porta Nova, in Barcelos, and at 19h00, at Praça Municipal, in Braga.
A circular stage to reveal the various facets of the daily life of circus artists. This is the most recent creation of the company Oliveira & Bachtler, Cir-k - which also results from a co-production with the Festival -, which will put "over the spotlight the peculiar and unusual universe of these nomadic families of show-jumpers. The performance will be presented at the Devesa Park, in Famalicão, on July 22, at 19h00, and will be taken to the Paço dos Duques, in Guimarães, on July 23, at 11h00.
Also the national productions O Silêncio do Corpo, by the company Erva Daninha, the show Vinil, by the collective Quando sais à rua or Kinski, by the Portuguese clown Rui Paixão, will "inhabit" and "claim" the public space of the cities of Barcelos, Braga, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão. In addition, the programme for the eighth edition of the International Vaudeville Rendez-Vous Festival also includes the show by the French company TBTF (To Busy To Funk), Mellow Yellow. Workshops, masterclass and pitching mark the beginning of the Festival
The first days of the eighth edition of the Vaudeville Rendez-Vous Festival will be dedicated to the mediation activities that make up the programme of the initiative. Designed for the public, each of the four cities hosting the Festival will host Creation Workshops, in which creations will be developed on the theme of occupying and relating to the public space. The performances will have, afterwards, a final presentation. Aimed at students, professionals or just people curious about the performing arts, the Festival will also host a masterclass guided by the company Los Galindos, about their creative process. The initiative will also include a pitching session.
