The commemorations of the 50th anniversary of 25 April 1974 set the tone for another edition of the Cultural Bulletin of Famalicão, one of the oldest publications of its kind in Portugal. The presentation of this edition, which features contributions from two dozen authors, takes place this Friday, 4 July, at 18h00, at the Bernardino Machado Museum in Vila Nova de Famalicão.
In the opening note of the new volume, No. 5 of the sixth series, for the year 2024, the Mayor, Mário Passos, emphasises the uniqueness of this publication dedicated to ‘a fundamental milestone in our contemporary history, whose echoes continue to shape the present and project the future in Portugal’.
‘This Cultural Bulletin is thus more than a record of the past, it is an invitation to actively participate in the cultural and civic life of the community (...) It is a journey through the roots that form us and the values that guide us,’ says the mayor, thanking all those who collaborated in its production.
This is an edition ‘entirely focused on the April 1974 Revolution and the Municipal Commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of 25 April (...) it perpetuates much of what has been done throughout the year and also leaves us with many testimonies from important protagonists of the events of April 1974 in our community,’ reads the editorial note signed by the Councillor for Culture, Pedro Oliveira.
The members of the Committee of Honour make up the first part of the publication of opinion articles for the Municipal Commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of 25 April, followed by a section with an overview of the initiatives developed over the last year in the municipality as part of the event.
The third and final part is dedicated to research, with three scientific articles on topics such as the Estado Novo, the events of the period from 1974 to 1976 and 25 April 1974 in Vila Nova de Famalicão, as well as bibliographical suggestions on the subject.
Joaquim Forte's work, "Perspectiva 1974-1976. A newspaper in the Revolution‘, an article about the newspaper ’PERSPECTIVA", based in Joane, which had eighteen paper editions published between July 1974 and June 1976.
The presentation of the new volume includes the cultural moment ‘As Portas que Abril abriu’, with a recitation by António Sousa and accompaniment by Carlos Carneiro on classical guitar, as well as a poetic moment with Miguel Abreu.
The Famalicão Cultural Bulletin is one of the oldest publications of its kind in Portugal, having been launched for the first time in 1980. The dozens of volumes already published contain scientific contributions that deepen our knowledge of Vila Nova de Famalicão, emphasising issues surrounding its history, heritage and people, and making valuable contributions to the social and political issues of our time.
