The various policies supporting families have once again earned the Municipality of Famalicão recognition as a
‘Family-Responsible Municipality’.
The title, awarded annually by the Observatory of Family-Responsible Municipalities, recognises the work carried out by the municipality in implementing family support policies and measures throughout the year in various areas, such as education, housing, transport, health, culture, sport and social action.
‘This is recognition of the policies we promote for the people of Famalicão, but also for the municipality's workers, and we are very proud of this because it validates the programmes we have developed and has a direct impact on the well-being of each of our citizens,’ emphasises the Mayor, Mário Passos.
The awarding of scholarships to university students, the creation of Young Talent Scholarships, income support and building work under the municipal Casa Feliz programme, the payment of sports federation registration fees and insurance for young athletes in the municipality, the existence of a fourth level of municipal social support in education and the provision of nutrition and psychology consultations for young people, as well as internal measures such as flexible working hours to support families and medical support in the areas of medicine, psychology, osteopathy and nutrition for municipal workers, are some of the measures promoted by the local authority that justify the distinction awarded to Vila Nova de Famalicão.
This is the fourteenth time – thirteenth consecutive time – that the municipality of Famalicão has received this distinction, awarded by the Observatory of Family-Responsible Municipalities, a project promoted by the Portuguese Association of Large Families, in partnership with the Social Security Institute.
The initiative aims to monitor, reward and disseminate the best practices of Portuguese local authorities in terms of family responsibility.
The ‘Family-Responsible Local Authority’ flag, a symbol awarded to distinguished municipalities, will be presented to the Municipality on 19 November, at a ceremony to be held in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.
