‘It's essential equipment for competing at the highest level and for making the leap I've been working towards. With these conditions, I can focus entirely on training, progress and results.’ This is how Famalicão athlete Manuela Oliveira expressed her gratitude on Tuesday for the €5,000 support granted by the City Council for the purchase of her new high-performance adapted wheelchair.
The mayor, Mário Passos, for a symbolic meeting, received the athlete from the Famalicão Tennis Club, currently the only woman in the country to compete in wheelchair tennis, at the Town Hall.
Manuela Oliveira talks about a chair made to measure, ‘more agile and lighter’, a ‘top-of-the-range model’ that will have a ‘huge impact and mark a big step’ in her career.
The Mayor, Mário Passos, also expressed his confidence in the athlete's career, reinforcing Famalicão's commitment to sport for all. For the mayor, the support now granted ‘is yet another demonstration of the continuous investment in overcoming challenges, in Famalicão's talent and in promoting equal opportunities’.
‘We will continue to create conditions so that our athletes have the necessary means to achieve excellence, and Manuela is one of those examples that makes us very proud,’ he said.
