Sofia Oliveira, an athlete from Famalicão and recent world kickboxing champion in the K1 -60 kg category, was welcomed last Friday, 5 December, by the Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Mário Passos, at the Town Hall.
The reception was intended to publicly mark and recognise the athlete's historic achievement, which is a source of pride for the municipality and the country. On 28 November, Sofia Oliveira became the first Portuguese woman to win the WAKO World Championship title, after winning the final 3-0 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
With a career spanning around 20 years in the sport, 12 of which were spent serving the national team, the champion emphasised the importance of this achievement and thanked the local authority for its support: ‘I am very grateful to the Town Hall for helping me during all these years of competition. The title means that the effort has been rewarded.’
Sofia Oliveira also recalled the long journey to winning the world gold medal, which she considers to be ‘a source of pride and a rewarding achievement,’ emphasising that success is the result of many years of hard work, persistence and sacrifice.
The Mayor, Mário Passos, highlighted not only the result achieved, but also the athlete's entire journey of overcoming adversity. ‘Winning a title like this requires a great capacity for overcoming adversity, a spirit of sacrifice, resilience, discipline and organisation. Sofia, in addition to being world champion, is an example of everything that lies behind this achievement,’ said the mayor.
Currently representing Desportivo de Guimarães, Sofia Oliveira has established herself as one of the leading national figures in kickboxing. This achievement reinforces her track record of excellence and consolidates her place among the top athletes in the sport.
