Next year, with regard to
water supply services, the local authority led by Mário Passos has once again decided not to pass on the increase imposed by Águas do Norte to the vast majority of households in the municipality (1st and 2nd brackets of variable tariffs) the increase imposed by Águas do Norte, applying the tariff update at the inflation rate only to large water consumers (3rd and 4th brackets of variable tariffs).
In 2026, Famalicenses will only see the update of wastewater treatment tariffs reflected in their environmental bill, which, it should be remembered, is calculated based on water consumption and solid waste collection. As for the wastewater treatment service, the tariff will be updated at a rate of 2.1% for the 1st and 2nd brackets and at a rate of 4% for the 3rd bracket and above. In the case of solid waste collection, the tariff will be updated by around 20%, in a year in which the local authority will pay 120% more for the provision of the service, due to the entry into force on 1 March of the new waste collection contract, which stipulates that the municipality will pay the service provider 59.68 euros for each tonne of waste collected, instead of the current 27 euros.
Overall, the update of these three tariffs will represent, on average, an increase of around 4% in the environmental bill for Famalicenses. Here is a practical example: a family of four with a family tariff and an average monthly consumption of 12 cubic metres will see their bill rise from €32.22 to €33.79 in 2026.
Even with this update, Famalicão remains on the list of municipalities in the region with the lowest tariffs, as these increases do not have a direct and proportional impact on the final amount of the environmental bill for Famalicão residents.
It should also be noted that, according to the executive's proposal, the social tariff will not be updated in 2026, and the municipality's support for the most vulnerable families in the municipality will remain unchanged. As for the Water Resources Tax (TRH) and the Waste Management Tax (TGR) – funds delivered directly to the State and mandatorily passed on to residents – only the TRH will be updated according to the water supplier.
