In 2025, Vila Nova de Famalicão recorded the smallest area burned in the last decade, with 24.1 hectares of land consumed by flames.
The councillor for Civil Protection in the municipality of Famalicão, Vânia Marçal, speaks of a year that was ‘particularly demanding from an operational and meteorological point of view’, with the municipality recording 153 days under alert levels and adverse conditions that tested the response capacity of the various Civil Protection agents.
The councillor highlights the results achieved, emphasising "the effectiveness of the work carried out in coordination and permanent readinesses".
In Vânia Marçal's opinion, these figures reflect not only the response capacity on the ground, but also the impact of the prevention policies promoted by the Municipal Civil Protection Service, which in 2025 carried out forestry operations on 62 hectares of fuel management strips, with the aim of strengthening forest fire protection. Maintenance and improvement works were also carried out on 24 kilometres of forest road network, which improved strategic access for emergency services in alert situations.
With International Civil Protection Day approaching this Sunday, 1 March, other figures from the activities of the Famalicão Municipal Civil Protection Service stand out.
This is the case with the fight against the Asian hornet, which once again received special attention in 2025, with the destruction of 1,845 nests throughout the year, in a continuous effort to mitigate risks to the population.
As part of raising awareness and promoting a culture of safety, 133 awareness-raising activities were also carried out, involving more than 3,000 participants from the school community, associations and the general population, reinforcing the importance of prevention and self-protection among the Famalicense community.
The Mayor, Mário Passos, praised the commitment and dedication of all those involved, emphasising that the results achieved ‘are the fruit of continuous planning, prevention and cooperation for the safety of the community and demonstrate the exemplary professionalism and deep sense of public service of our Civil Protection agents’.
