City Council continues to establish itself as a leading figure in supporting sport. A clear demonstration of this commitment was reaffirmed at the executive meeting on Thursday, 26 March, with the approval of a new tranche of financial support, amounting to around €450,000, earmarked for the development of sporting activities and training across 43 clubs in the municipality. With this boost, the total investment for the 2025/2026 season is expected to reach a record €610,000, covering around 5,440 registered athletes across 50 sports organisations in Famalicão.
These grants were formalised yesterday, at the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library, with the signing of collaboration agreements between sports officials and the Mayor, Mário Passos, who emphasised the importance of this ecosystem, stating that “we are a leading example in sport” and that this success is due, above all, to the joint effort to ensure that sports projects “can continue in both quantity and quality”. The mayor also reiterated his commitment to continue working “hand in hand” with the associations to build a sporting landscape that is “increasingly robust, solid and consolidated”.
Municipal investment in training has seen a significant and steady increase. Whilst funding for the 2023/2024 season stood at around €528,000 for 5,000 registered athletes, this figure rose to €540,000 in 2024/2025, covering 5,236 young people. The increased funding this season thus underlines the priority the municipality places on the sustained growth in the number of participants in the municipality.
Alongside direct financial support for athletes, the Municipality of Famalicão maintains an ongoing plan to modernise sports facilities across the municipality, with investments in LED lighting and improvements to changing rooms and venues, ensuring that the growth in the number of athletes is accompanied by excellent training conditions.
