The Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Mário Passos, met with the Secretary of State for Internal Administration, Telmo Correia, on Tuesday, 3 March, to reinforce to the Portuguese Government the urgency of building new facilities for the National Republican Guard (GNR) in Famalicão.
The Municipal Councillor for Security, Hélder Pereira, accompanied the mayor on his trip to Lisbon.
Mário Passos reaffirmed to the Secretary of State the municipality's willingness to apply the same model of cooperation to the GNR in Famalicão that enabled the much-desired refurbishment of the Public Security Police (PSP) station in Famalicão, specifically through the signing of an inter-administrative contract with the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Internal Administration, which would allow the City Council to launch the tender process for the work, draw up the implementation project and assume the contractual position of project owner.
‘The results of the cooperation we previously established for the renovation of the PSP building are there for all to see, and we are in a position to repeat it to now improve the working conditions of the GNR military personnel, so that they can carry out their duties with dignity, efficiency and motivation,’ says Mário Passos.
It should be noted that the Municipality has already designated the site for the new GNR facilities in Famalicão, on municipal land located in Lugar dos Queimados, in the Union of Parishes of Famalicão and Calendário.
The Secretary of State for Internal Administration has shown the Government's full willingness to cooperate with the local authority in the construction of the “new home” for the GNR in Famalicão, in line with the policy of dignifying and enhancing the status of this career. We are currently awaiting the result of an application that will allow, in the immediate term, the implementation of measures to resolve the most urgent problems affecting the current GNR building.
