The municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão will mark
Europe Day on May 9 with a conference on the 40th anniversary of Portugal's accession to the European Union.
The session is scheduled for 11h00, at the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library, will feature speeches by Famalicão mayor Mário Passos, José Mendes, executive president of the Mestre Casais Foundation, António Cunha, president of CCDR-Norte, Paulo Cunha, an MEP from Famalicão, and will be moderated by the president of IPCA, Maria José Fernandes.
The programme to commemorate Europe Day in Famalicão kicks off at 9h30 with the traditional raising of the European flag at the Town Hall to the sound of the Hymn of Europe, played by the ArtEduca orchestra. This is followed by the March of the European Clubs at 10h30; with a route through the city from the Paços do Concelho gardens to the Praça-Mercado Municipal.
At 11h00, the conference ‘40 years of European integration - building with Local Government’ will take place in the auditorium of the Municipal Library. Participation in the initiative is free, but subject to registration by emailing international@famalicao.pt. The course of the European Union (EU), the contribution of local policies to the competitiveness of the European area, the EU as a driving force for regional and local development, European integration and the new agendas for a common future will be some of the themes debated at the conference.
To mark Europe Day, the Municipal Library will also be showing the exhibition ‘Famalicão and the PRR: Projects that Transform’, with a presentation of the various projects being developed in Famalicão with the support of the PRR.
Later, at 14h30, the Casa da Juventude will host the Famalicão EuroClubs Hub, a meeting that will bring together the European Clubs of the 3rd Cycle and Secondary Education of the municipality, where the services and resources of the Casa da Juventude will be presented, as well as the projects and initiatives that have been developed by the European clubs so far. The aim is to promote the exchange of ideas and good practices in order to strengthen co-operation between schools and enhance the active participation of young people. Participants will also be able to learn about the opportunities offered by the European Solidarity Corps, through the testimony of a YUPI volunteer. Created by the European Union, the European Solidarity Corps is aimed at young people up to the age of 30, giving them the chance to volunteer or work on projects at home or abroad.
At 15h00, Parque da Devesa will host the launch of an experimental mini-rocket developed by the University of Minho's School of Sciences (ECUM). The project, coordinated by teachers Joaquim Carneiro and Manuel Filipe Costa and researcher Iran Rocha, involved students from CIOR and UMinho and symbolises Europe's commitment to youth, science and innovation as drivers of development and the University of Minho's commitment to development and innovation.
The Europe Day celebrations in Famalicão will end at the Camilo Castelo Branco Secondary School at 21h00 with the European Tea, a space for discussion organised by the European Club of the school that is also the European Parliament's ambassador school. The initiative will take place under the theme ‘European Citizenship: a guarantee of Peace?’ and will be attended by MEP Paulo Cunha, the National Coordinator of the European Parliament's Ambassador Schools, Isabel Baltazar, and PSP Luís Gaspar, a UN blue helmet in several peace missions.
