“We have a key principle: sport for all. And the Famalicão Municipal Championships make a significant contribution to realising this ambition,” emphasised the Mayor, Mário Passos, at the signing ceremony for the programme contracts with the nearly twenty sports associations that organise the events of the Municipal Championships. The formalisation of the council’s support, amounting to 70,000 euros, took place yesterday, 9 April, at the Town Hall.
At the formal ceremony, which was also attended by the Councillor for Sport, Pedro Oliveira, and numerous representatives from the Parish Councils hosting the sporting events, the mayor praised the fact that these competitions promote “decentralised sport and sporting cohesion within the municipality”, also highlighting the crucial role of association leaders and those involved in organising these competitions, which include futsal, sport fishing, pigeon racing, billiards, tennis, mountain biking and trail running.
“It is essential support for us to achieve our ambition of getting all Famalicão residents to take up a sport or some form of physical exercise,” emphasises Mário Passos, who is pleased to note “exponential growth in the quality of the events, which has attracted more athletes and teams to take part in these championships”.
The Famalicão Municipal Championships are a sports initiative organised by the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, in close partnership with the municipality’s community organisations, and currently involve a total of 19 local clubs and 10,000 athletes. In 2025, it was given a new visual identity, adopting the name “Famalicão Competes”, a logo created to strengthen the project and featured in all competitions.
