This Saturday, Vila Nova de Famalicão marks the 52nd anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, commemorating the historic date of 25 April 1974 with a series of events celebrating freedom and democracy.
On Saturday the 25th, the celebrations begin at 10h00 at the Town Hall with the traditional raising of the Portuguese flag to the sound of the national anthem performed by the Famalicão Music Band. This will be followed by a brief musical performance by the senior members of the municipality’s Senior Academies and the customary Solemn Session of the Municipal Assembly commemorating the date, with speeches by all parties represented in the body, as well as by the Mayor, Mário Passos, and the President of the Municipal Assembly, João Nascimento.
For the President of the Assembly, the commemoration of this date “is a noble act of ensuring, through remembrance that the firm choice for freedom and democracy endures. It was there that the journey began which also allowed, amongst so many other achievements and aspirations, the role of the institutions to be strengthened. In the Municipal Assembly too, we honour that legacy, respecting these values, without ever taking them for granted.”
The programme marking the 52nd anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Vila Nova de Famalicão includes a range of cultural events taking place across various venues in the municipality. On the eve of the anniversary, 24 April, there will be a talk on “Being a woman before and after April”, starting at 21h00, in the auditorium of the Ribeirão School Group.
