“It is a fitting tribute to the Famalicão Volunteer Fire Brigade, who have served the municipality with dedication and a sense of mission for over a century.” This is how the Mayor of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Mário Passos, described the newly unveiled sculpture commemorating the 135th anniversary of the Famalicão Volunteer Fire Brigade Humanitarian Association.
The sculpture, named “Sentinels”, was unveiled yesterday, Sunday 19 April, and can now be viewed by all at the new roundabout connecting Avenida D. Afonso Henriques and Avenida dos Descobrimentos, one of the city’s main entry points.
It should be noted that the sculpture “Sentinels”, created by Augusto Costa and Alexandre Costa in Corten steel, stands on a concrete base, surrounded by a circle of water – an element evocative of life. The verticality present in the composition represents steadfastness and cooperation, whilst, at night, the light transforms and extends the work in time and space. More than just public art, “Sentinels” stands as a landmark of recognition and remembrance, paying tribute to the women and men of the Famalicão Volunteer Firefighters’ Humanitarian Association who, with courage, offer “life for life”.
For Mário Passos, this new sculpture “brings the memory and gratitude of a community into the public space”.
Avelino Reis, president of the Famalicão Volunteer Firefighters’ Humanitarian Association, also shared this sentiment. “We had been looking forward to this day so that we could pay a well-deserved tribute to those who do and have done so much for our municipality,” he said.
In addition to paying tribute to the municipality’s fire brigade, Mário Passos also praised the improvements that the new roundabout has brought to access to the town, helping to improve road safety and increase the flow of traffic.
