Vila Nova de Famalicão wants to be part of the solution to end the problem of plastic pollution and for that, the City Council decided to join the international movement "Plastic Free July", which since 2011 promotes the reduction of plastic use around the world.
The City Council wants to encourage famalicenses to avoid the use of disposable plastics in order to reduce the impact and pollution that these materials cause to the environment.
In addition to the awareness messages disseminated in the various communication platforms of the municipality on the habits that famalicenses can adopt to reduce plastic, the City Council will also promote an awareness-raising action, to be held on July 13, at the weekly market of Famalicão, with the distribution of half a thousand-cloth bags.
It should be remembered that yesterday, Sunday July 3, was the International Day without Plastic Bags.
A report by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) denounces that, since the year 2000, more than 75% of the plastic produced in the world has become waste and this brings harmful consequences to wildlife, natural systems and human beings.
It should be noted that the "Plastic Free July" campaign was created by the Plastic Free Foundation, being an international initiative that mobilises millions of people around the world to take on the challenge and commitment to reduce the consumption of disposables over the course of a month. It all began in 2011, thanks to Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, who started the movement in her town in Australia, infecting her community, the local government and, from then on, in the following years, the whole country and the world.
