Between 16 and 22 September, Vila Nova de Famalicão is once again marking European Mobility Week. For seven days, like many other European cities, the municipality aims to sensitise Famalicenses to more sustainable mobility, focusing this year on the theme of
‘Shared Public Space’.
Over the next week, various initiatives will be organised focusing on sustainable mobility and the use of public spaces for people rather than cars. A new feature of this year's European Mobility Week is the free circulation of Voltas - circular urban transport - between the 16th and 22nd.
This year the renovated Bus Station is also joining in the celebrations. The venue will host most of the activities - which favours the use of public passenger transport. In particular, you can visit the Antique Bicycle Exhibition from Monday to Friday.
The Bus Station will also feature a road circuit, which can be travelled from Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th, between 14:30 and 17:00. On Tuesday 17th, there will also be an awareness-raising event entitled ‘Shared Public Space - In Safety’, organised by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) and the Association for the Promotion of Child Safety (APSI).
On Saturday 21st, between 4pm and 6pm, the municipality invites Famalicenses to pedal to promote light mobility. The route starts at Alameda Dr Francisco Sá Carneiro, continues through Devesa Park, crosses the city to Praça D. Maria II, returning along Avenida 25 de Abril to Sinçães Park, and ends with a Sunset, with music and a DJ.
The European Mobility Week activities also extend to Praça D. Maria II. On Sunday 22nd, between 10am and 6pm, the European Car Free Day will be marked with educational, cultural and sporting entertainment, cycling circuits, reading moments, traditional games, among other initiatives. On the same day, there will also be a dance show organised by the Gindança Academy, between 17:00 and 18:30.
There will also be a Mobility Market in Praça D. Maria II on Sunday, from 10h00 to 18h00.
The European Mobility Week was set up in 2002 by the Commissioner for the Environment with the political and financial support of the European Commission (EC), and is a partnership between the European Coordination Office, local authorities and the EC.
