In 2000, Annie Ernaux wrote a book about the abortion she had in the early 1960s, when it was still illegal in France and those who had it risked jail. At the time, she was a promising young student with opportunities on the horizon, whose pregnancy threw her whole present and future into question. Now, Ernaux's story is brought to the cinema by Audrey Diwan, screenwriter turned director, with Anamaria Vartolomei in the main role.
