Beauty Queen is set in Leenane, Ireland. A place where it always rains and almost everyone emigrates in search of freedom and work. In a combination of acid comedy, black comedy and dark tragedy, this play is a tragicomedy full of humour, cruelty, love and loneliness. The story revolves around Maureen, a forty-year-old single woman who takes care of her mother, Mag, a selfish and manipulative seventy-year-old woman. Maureen's two sisters have both left home, but Maureen, with an unstable past, has been stuck at home with her mother.
During the play, the Folan family home is visited by young Ray Dooley and his older brother Pato Dooley, a man weary from being forced to work in England and frustrated by the loneliness of his life. The expectation of a love story between Maureen and Pato is completely subverted, in an intrigue full of surprises, secrets and betrayals.
