Ghost Portraits is the new film by Kléber Mendonça Filho ("Bacurau", "Aquarius" and "Som ao Redor"). The result of seven years of work and research, filming and editing, the film brings the historical and human space as the main character, revisiting it through the great cinemas that served as living spaces during the 20th century. As in so many other cities around the world throughout the 20th century, millions of people went to the cinema in the centre of Recife. With the passage of time, the ruins of these large cinemas reveal some truths about life in society. Composed largely of archive material, it uses photographs and moving images found in personal collections. Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
