After being elected leader of the country and having neutralised all the forces opposing him, H. has the chance to increase his power even further: the current President is at death's door and, with the support of the Armed Forces, H. can succeed him. But within the Party, there are those who see the Armed Forces as a relic of the past: a reactionary, corrupt and ankylosed institution. The future of the country for the captain of the army of troublemakers, the Party's number two, H.'s old friend, depends on the strength of his personal army and not on the Armed Forces. On the Night of the Long Knives, the military man, the intellectual trade unionist and hundreds of other Party members were murdered, the army was abolished and the situation brought under control. Do we know the rest or have we forgotten it? The question raised by Mishima about the corridors of power in this very calculating play can be put this way today: what can a Regime do when those it has needed, those who have manipulated the masses in its favour, become troublesome? The Regime can't survive without the crowd, of course, but does it have a place for intermediaries or does it ultimately need to control them?
