‘Migrants’, one of Matéi Visniec's latest plays, allows us to follow a series of stories that have no shortage of points of contact with a reality that most of us only know from television and newspapers: the crossing of the Mediterranean Sea in precarious boats, managed by more or less unscrupulous hauliers; the dilemma of young people who, on arriving in Europe, fall prey to organ traffickers; the backstage of politics, with a President supported by his Adviser, who doesn't shy away from ‘politically correct speech’; the sale of heartbeat detection machines for migrants (known as clandestines); the insomnia of a couple who, after seeing barbed wire walls grow around them, decide to turn their home into a kind of mercy centre. With these cases, which, although fictitious, are the result of the Romanian author's daily contact with the phenomenon (first as a citizen and then as a journalist), Matéi Visniec draws attention to the humanitarian tragedy that we comfortably call the ‘refugee crisis’. Without running the risk of repeating ourselves (or seeming exaggerated) when we return to the mistakes of yesteryear, perpetuating stigmas, prejudices, fears, terrors and misery, this play is the wake-up call we need.
