Dionysus is an unavoidable figure as a primordial being, patron of the performing arts in the West. In the East, there is a parallel with the figure of Shiva, as a destructive, renewing, dancer god, who is also linked to creativity, self-knowledge and transcendence through altered states of consciousness.
The show proposes an unconventional relationship in the use of performative space, proposing to dilute the barrier with the spectator in an immersive and sensorial experience. In Dionysus we dive into the imagery of this ancestral figure to explore the anatomy of the psyche, the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious, and to experience the affinity between the human world and its natural surroundings, namely the animal and plant realms. Both aspects are associated with the Dionysian archetype. Through dance and electronic musical composition, the figure and story of Dionysus are joined by other choreographic-sounding proto-narratives that emerge from its multiple parallel stories where the words of Hélia Correia resonate.
