On the desolate coast of Denmark live Martina and Philippa, the beautiful daughters of a devout clergyman who preaches salvation through abstinence. The two girls sacrifice the passion of youth for faith and duty, and even many years after their father's death, they continue to keep his austere teachings alive among the people of the village. But with the arrival of Babette, a mysterious refugee from the French Civil War, life for the sisters and the small village begins to change. Babette quickly convinces them to try something extraordinary - a French-style meal, a real "gourmet"! Her feast scandalises the elderly locals. But who is this unknown and talented Babette, who terrorises these pious people with the prospect of losing their souls because they are so fond of an earthly pleasure?
