A brilliant exercise in the dynamics of power and submission in relationships and one of Fassbinder's most successful attempts to present his own play on screen. The story revolves around Petra von Kant (Margit Carstensen), a successful fashion designer who lives locked in her flat with her assistant Marlene (Irm Hermann). Between her creations and her memories, Petra lives isolated in her world. Karin Thimm (Hanna Schygulla) is the missing element in the claustrophobic relationship that will develop between the three women. Karin is introduced by a friend to Petra, who id immediately fascinated by her. The two are going to have a love affair, which will not last long...
