Legend has it that while Camões was exiled in Macau, he retreated to the Patane Cave, listening to the echoes of his dreams and despair, to write the great epic poem Os Lusíadas, which told the story of his people. Upon his departure, he met a native of Patane, Tin-Nam-Men (Dinamene), with whom he fell in love. Setting sail with the poet on the Nau de Prata, they were caught in a great storm in the South Seas. The Nau de Prata was doomed to sink, so the women boarded a boat and the men saved themselves by swimming. Camões, with his arm in the air, holding Os Lusíadas, swam to shore, but the boat carrying the beautiful Tin-Nam-Men was swallowed by the waves.
