Simon Stephens’ *Punk Rock* is a visceral play that delves into the world of a group of teenagers on the cusp of finishing secondary school, grappling with academic pressure, identity crises and the latent violence that permeates their daily lives. The relevance of Punk Rock remains alarmingly topical: at a time when young people’s mental health is at the centre of public debate, the play starkly exposes the impact of isolation, bullying, social expectations and the inability to communicate, pushing things to a point of irreversible rupture. Stephens avoids facile moralising and constructs complex, fragile and contradictory characters, revealing how violence can emerge not merely from an extreme act, but from a silent accumulation of small humiliations and fears. The urgency to continue staging it lies precisely in this ability to reflect contemporary anxieties: each new generation recognises itself in these young people, in their anxiety about the future, in the pressure to conform, in the need to belong. Punk Rock is not merely a portrait of a specific youth, but a constant warning about the cracks in the educational and social system, asserting itself as theatre that is necessary, uncomfortable, topical and deeply human.
