In the early 1970s, Gary is a 15-year-old kid from the San Fernando Valley, an area of Los Angeles adjacent to the entertainment industry, with a spirit for business. On picture-taking day for school, he meets Alana, a much older girl, and develops a crush on her. At first angry, she begins to develop a friendship and partnership with him, through businesses such as selling waterbeds and an arcade. Together, they cross paths with police violence, a legendary older actor, an aggressive producer, a trip to New York, a political campaign and a whole host of escapades inspired by the real life of Hollywood producer Gary Goetzam.
A film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson that marks his return to the San Fernando Valley and to the 1970s that he had captured in films like "Boogie Nights" or "Inherent Vice". Starring Cooper Hoffman, son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, as Gary, and Alana Haim, of HAIM, as Alana, both in their film debuts.
