The year is 1944, during the Italian Social Republic. Bardone pretends to be a colonel in the Italian army to deceive the families of political prisoners, who pay him large sums of money in the hope that he will secure their release. One day, he is captured by the Gestapo, who offer him a deal: Bardone will be released if he enters San Vittore prison, assuming the identity of General Della Rovere (a recently assassinated resistance leader), and obtains information about an important member of the resistance.
