The film portrays three women living in Bombay: Prabha (Kani Kusruti), head nurse at a large hospital, receives an electric cooker at home that seems to have been sent by her husband, who emigrated to Germany and whom she hasn't heard from for a long time; Anu (Divya Prabha), Prabha's work colleague and roommate, doesn't accept the idea of an arranged marriage and is in love with Shiaz (Hridhu Haroon), a young Muslim, with whom she longs to be alone; while Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), a cook at the same hospital, faces the possibility of losing the house she lives in and decides to return to the small town where she was born.

Through their daily lives, the viewer sees the struggle of the working classes (especially women) in India's largest city, where life is difficult and progress often clashes with tradition. The first Indian film to win the Grand Prix at Cannes (and the first in 30 years to compete for the Palme d'Or), this is a drama by Indian Payal Kapadia, who is making her feature film directorial debut here after the documentary ‘Uncertain Night’, which in 2021 won her the Oeil d'Or Award at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes.

This initiative is part of the ‘Cinema Paraíso Comunidades’ project, directed by the Cineclube de Joane and promoted by the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, as part of the ‘Há Cultura 2024-2027’ strategic programme, in co-production with the Narciso Ferreira Theatre, and co-financed by the European Union through the NORTE 2030 Regional Programme.

The screening of this feature film, which includes a talk in a public space, is the culmination of the community sessions organised by the Cineclube de Joane throughout June and July this year in the town of Lemenhe. The project involved several local partners, including the Inter-Freguesia Social Commission of the Vila Nova de Famalicão Urban Area, the Lemenhe, Mouquim and Jesufrei Parish Union, the Famalicão Gypsy Social, Recreational and Cultural Association and the Multicultural Integration Association.
