The seventh edition of the Famalicão Youth Orchestra will open the first part of the programme with Rossini's famous overture to the opera ‘William Tell’. Composed in 1829, the overture has been immortalised in concert programmes around the world, with its famous horse march, not to mention the beautiful melodies that precede it, with cello, flute and English horn solos.
Richard Strauss wrote the Concerto in D Major for oboe and small orchestra in 1945. A major work in the oboe repertoire, it is an enormous challenge not only for the soloist but also for the orchestra, with its very chamber-like writing, in which the clarinet, viola and English horn dialogue harmoniously with the soloist.
The concert ends with Johannes Brahms' majestic Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73. Premiered on 30 December 1877 in Vienna, this symphony offers us a classical structure with four movements, all different but interconnected. An orchestral ode!
