In this comedy, Carlo Goldoni takes us on a journey through the Italian society of the 1700s, obsessed with countryside holidays. We follow the characters in their saga to find the money to have the most luxurious holidays and compete with their neighbours to show who has the best evenings, hoping to hear the highest praise and fearing severe criticism of a whole society that rushes to their country houses to spend in a fortnight what they will have to pay back with high interest for the rest of the year. Obsession of Vilegiatura, in my opinion, has a huge parallel with contemporary society; we live lives built to show off on social networks and we often go into debt to keep up appearances. This text by the extraordinary Carlo Goldoni, helps us reflect on what has changed so little from 1700 to 2023, the human being is still the same precious ridiculousness as ever.
