The St Michael Grand Fair is one of the county's oldest traditions. Established in 1205, when King Sancho I granted Vila Nova a charter, the Grand Fair is closely linked to the origins of the municipality, namely to the predominant activity of the time: agriculture. In this sense, the St Michael's market, held in Praça D. Maria II, brings together farmers, artisans and the famous taverns, offering the most genuine and traditional produce of the county. Dressed to the nines, the merchants bring with them the freshest vegetables, the tastiest eggs and the tenderest chickens from their backyard, in a real trip back in time, when everything was "homemade" and organic.
