All the weak and unprotected turn to the character of Joan of Arc, written by Brecht. All the weak and unprotected see themselves represented by her in the struggle of Chicago meat industry workers. Joan follows her missionary spirit as spokesperson for the people and mediator of conflicts between workers and the power that runs the meat industry.

Throughout the play, it is clear that Joan is manipulated by the class she represents, but also by the powers that be, who offer her small victories in order to use her as a tool. Joan is the people's outlet and the instrument through which the powers that be attempt to control the fury of the crowd. Joana could well be that radio comedian who alleviates the frustration of endless hours in traffic on the way home at the end of a working day. Joana has all the air of being that politically engaged artist who produces strong speeches in defence of all the oppressed in the world, who feeds on their stories, misfortunes, tragedies, and who unconsciously contributes to the romanticisation of their misfortunes.

This Joana is the carnival of capitalism, the instrument of a temporary abolition of the oppression of work. After all, aren't all artists the escape valve that allows us to sugarcoat this pill?
