Being chaste and the purest of Men, Hippolytus abhors the pleasures of the flesh, refusing outright to venerate and pay due homage to the goddess Cypris (Aphrodite), incurring the tremendous sin of hybris, and therefore being punished with his tragic death.
This hybris - excessive confidence, exaggerated pride, arrogance and/or insolence - does not make Hippolytus in any way totally innocent. His excessive - because exclusive and exacerbated - veneration of Artemis, the virgin goddess of the forests and the hunt, who soon cast him into an offensive and unnatural virginity, is as responsible for his death as the passion that his stepmother, Phaedra, feels for him.
Set ablaze by the designs of the offended and vengeful Cypris, Pharisee wastes away with passion for her stepson Hippolytus. Wounded by love, she begins by keeping quiet and concealing her "illness" in the face of her Nanny's insistence on discovering her evil, trying to resist and overcome the delusions of passion with efforts at sensible reflection.
However, Cypris "is not a goddess: she is a being more powerful than a god."
