A personal essay on the USA based on the life and work of actor Henry Fonda. His roles merge into a fascinating and divided figure. A reserved man who believed he had ‘no good answers for anything’ becomes the unlikely driving force behind a parallel story. His voice, recorded in his last interview in 1981, and his avatars on screen guide us through America's past and present, from the village of Fonda to the Pacific, passing through the Midwest; from 1651 to the 1980s and the presidency of another actor. Many places, times and characters conceive an invisible republic – the United States of Fonda.
