Fear and Misery of the Third Reich is a play written by Bertolt Brecht between 1935 and 1943. It premiered in Paris in 1938 with eight scenes. Over the next few years, Brecht added more scenes, bringing the total to 35. The exercise presented here brings together some of them, carefully and intentionally chosen by the students and the director.
Each scene is preceded by a poem or commentary on daily life under the Nazi regime and shows how the dictatorship, imposed by the German regime, penetrated all social classes and areas of life, spreading fear and mistrust.  In his review of the premiere of Terror and Misery in the Third Reich, which is the first published essay on this play, Walter Benjamin defines Brecht as "a specialist in starting from scratch".
At the moment in which we unfortunately find ourselves worldwide - in which we are returning to the mistakes of yesteryear, perpetuating stigmas, prejudices, fears, terrors and misery - we have never thought it more opportune to revisit this play.
