After ten years in prison, Lang returns to his hometown in northwestern China, now almost abandoned and about to be demolished to make way for a factory complex. In an effort to clean up the city before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Lang can only find work hunting stray dogs. A dangerous black dog, with a high bounty on its head, bites Lang. The two are isolated to prevent the spread of rabies, and a friendship develops between them. Through a deeply sincere portrayal of the relationship between man and animal, the film tells a story of redemption and renewal.
