Innovatively naturalistic and stripped-down biblical drama, with the life of Christ retold from the Gospel according to Matthew. The parables, the first disciples, rebellion, determination, miracles, intolerance, loneliness and impatience. This is how Jesus gained a legion of followers and enemies, according to the Gospel of St. Matthew. In this major work, Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini presents us with a Christ completely different from the 'epic' style with which cinema has characterised him; a solar Christ who is accompanied by the music of Bach, while the Virgin is interpreted by the author's own mother.
