In 1944, Hiroo Onoda (1922-2014), an officer in the Imperial Japanese Army, was sent to the island of Lubang in the Philippines. His mission: to do everything possible, with his men, to hinder enemy attacks on the island. Obligatory: to stay alive. Forbidden: that he surrender. The promise: they would rescue him whatever the cost. Most of the Japanese troops have since died or been captured by American forces. Onoda and his men hid in the jungle and the group died out over the years. Onoda ended up alone in the mountains for 29 years, never knowing that the war was over and that the Emperor had surrendered. Directed by Arthur Harari ("Diamant Noir") and played by Yuya Endo, a war epic that was in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for four César Awards.
