The City Council of Famalicão has decided to cancel this year's edition of the Handicraft and Gastronomy Fair, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The event, which claims to be one of the main tourist products of the famalicense council and the Minho region, gathers the best and most genuine national knowledge and flavours every year, receiving the visit of about 200 thousand people.
The safeguarding of public health, which prevents the concentration of people, the main source of contagion, is the reason for the cancellation of the Fair, which has been taking place for 36 years between the end of August and the beginning of September.
"The cancellation of the Handicrafts and Gastronomy Fair is due to the exceptional circumstances caused by COVID-19, in a decision that follows the recommendations of the Directorate General of Health - DGS," says Paulo Cunha, the mayor.
Meanwhile, the mayor said that "the municipality is preparing for this summer a programme of animation, with several moments, which will promote the economic, cultural and tourist recovery of the city and which will take place in safe conditions, in line with the DGS".
It should be remembered that, every year, at the end of August, almost one hundred craftsmen and producers from all over the country head to Famalicão where, for a week, they present and create unique pieces and products from the most diverse raw materials. It is usually ten days of meetings and reunions with the most ancient traditions, uses and customs of Portugal.
