This Saturday, March 25, Vila Nova de Famalicão joins the biggest and most important hour for the Planet.
The municipality will once again join the worldwide blackout of the Hour of the Planet, symbolic initiative promoted by the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), with the objective of sensitizing and alerting the population for the effects of the climatic crisis.
Between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm this Saturday, and similarly to what will happen in several cities worldwide, Famalicão will provide a unique moment of contemplation by turning off the lights of some of the most emblematic places and monuments in the city, such as the Town Hall building and surrounding garden, Casa das Artes, Camillian Studies Centre, Palacete Barão da Trovisqueira/Bernardino Machado Museum, House of Culture and Largo dos Eixidos, Youth House, Casa do Território (Devesa Park) and Cupertino de Miranda Foundation.
In Paços do Concelho, the initiative will also be marked by the realization of a night picnic that will alert to the consumption of sustainable foods and season, fighting especially food waste. The moment will also include an acoustic concert and will be promoted in partnership with ArtEduca - Conservatório de Música de Vila Nova de Famalicão and the "Less is More" project of the Camilo Castelo Branco School Grouping.
Also in the scope of this year's edition of the initiative, the famalicense municipality is also committed to promoting the fight against food waste, with a view to reducing bio-waste.
The Earth Hour was born in 2007, in Sydney, Australia, as a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the problem of climate change. Last year, thousands of cities in 192 countries participated in this initiative, which erased more than 12,000 monuments and buildings.
