From Saturday, the home and life of Maria do Carmo Marques, 73, will no longer be the same.
Young volunteers from the “Just a Change” association, which has already rebuilt hundreds of houses and institutions across the country, are rehabilitating the house where she has lived for 47 years, in the parish of Sezures.
The project, which promotes the rehabilitation of housing for needy citizens, is for the first time operating in the municipality of Famalicense where these days about 30 volunteers get to work on the requalification of three houses in the municipality.
In Sezures, the cold and rain will no longer be a problem for Maria do Carmo Marques. The work is completed this weekend and it is with great satisfaction and a smile on her face that she sees the house "look as good as new".
Famalicense mayor Mário Passos took advantage of the association's presence in Famalicão to visit the work and get to know the work of "Just a Change", to whom the municipality recently granted financial support of 20 thousand euros for the realisation of the interventions.
"The work of Just a Change is remarkable and is another instrument, to add to so many others that we have at our disposal, to guarantee decent housing, with minimum conditions of comfort and well-being to those who need it most", he said, also launching the challenge to the association to continue to develop its project in Famalicão, helping other households.
Mário Passos also left a word of thanks to the approximately 30 young volunteers from all over the country involved in these requalifications and to the companies in the municipality that supported the work. "It is good to see that civil society cares about its neighbours and is also committed to finding answers to the most pressing problems in our community. In a week when so much is said about young people, Famalicão is another remarkable example of the strength of our youth", he said.
