Vila Nova de Famalicão City Council is going ahead with the extension and remodelling of the Senador Sousa Fernandes Primary School, also known as the Mões Primary School.
The public tender for the contract was approved yesterday, Thursday 16 May, with a base price of 1.3 million euros (+ VAT).
The project includes the refurbishment of the existing building and the construction of a new one, both internally interconnected to facilitate circulation. The ground floor will house, among other areas, the canteen, the pantry, storage, four classrooms and the teachers' room. The first floor will house the library, a support room and storage.
Also planned is the reorganisation of the space surrounding the existing building, with the creation of access ramps, a playground with a games area, green spaces and a teaching garden.
The contract has an execution time of 540 days: 360 days for the first phase of the work, which consists of constructing the new building, and 180 days for the second phase of rehabilitating the existing building.
It should be remembered that the Senador Sousa Fernandes Primary School, due to its age and type of construction, already has several limitations, making it necessary to reorganise it and create new spaces for school activities.
At the end of the executive meeting, the mayor, Mário Passos, recognised that the current building "is very weak". "We are working on upgrading the school park and the deficits that we have been signalling have been eliminated so that students, teachers and staff can be at school with all the conditions," he said.
