Winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature, French author Annie Ernaux has a vast literary oeuvre and was known for her autobiographical novels, including "Les Armoires Vides" (1972), "La Place" (1984), “Les Années" (2008) or "L'Autre Fille" (2011). This film, directed by her and by David Ernaux-Briot, her son, is a compilation of several home recordings made by her ex-husband, Philippe after they bought a Super 8 camera. These short films are a portrait of a time and place that show not only moments of intimacy between the various elements of the family, but also the workings of French society at that time. "When reviewing our Super 8 films, shot between 1972 and 1981, I realised that they were not only a family archive, but a testimony to the past, lifestyle and aspirations of a social class in the decade after 1968," Annie Ernaux tells us. "I wanted to incorporate these silent images into a story that brought the intimate together with the social and history, to convey the flavour and colour of those years."
