During sleep, the protagonist Aurora/"Rose" is forced to internalise her self-image, consciously or unconsciously, until she is awakened from her enforced isolation. In most of the tales, if the initial curse on "Rose" had prevailed, she would have died. Instead, she remains alive, in a kind of comatose, waking state. In both versions, Grimm's or Perrault's, sleep suspends the princess between two different worlds, that is, transmutes her into the undead.

Moreover, sleep is a protective way of preserving the beauty of her youth. By imprisoning the heroine, reducing her to a perfect patriarchal paradigm of the ideal woman, sleep also interrupts her adolescence, depriving her of youthful joys and experiences. This state of induced coma and inaction through sleep isolates her from society and prevents her from learning to cope with the trials and tribulations of the real world. Social forces and gender role expectations shape everything she does, from her curse, during her coma sleep, to meeting a prince.

These fairy tales start from the premise that the responsibility of womanhood is a challenge that many women wish to avoid. The traditional perspective of the authors strongly influences the gender identity of the protagonist and the way she interacts with society and gender. Individual "defined" happiness and "forever" happiness are not promised to anyone, especially not to a Sleeping Beauty.
