Lai Yiu-Fai (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and Ho Po-Wing (Leslie Cheung) are lovers and decide to move to Argentina. Everything goes well until, during a trip to the Iguazu Falls, they argue and split up. Yiu-Fai takes a job in a tango bar and tries to save money for a ticket back to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Po-Wing continues his trip, gets involved with other men and works as a gigolo to survive. When Po-Wing reappears injured, Yiu-Fai feels sympathetic, but unable to become more intimately involved again... Nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, "Happy Together" is the portrait of an impossible love, with all that is addictive about it, and earned Wong Kar-wai the best director award in the same competition.
