The fiftieth anniversary of the founding of democracy in Portugal will be marked in Vila Nova de Famalicão with an intense program that starts this November and continues until 2024. The topic will receive the attention of the municipal executive at the city council meeting this Thursday, November 9, with the evaluation of the proposal to set up the Honorary and Scientific Committees for the celebrations.
In addition to setting up the Honorary Committee, made up of 16 personalities from Famalicão who have played a major role in the political, social and cultural life of the municipality and who played a leading role in the development of Famalicão and the consolidation of democracy and freedom, tomorrow's executive meeting will also formalize the setting up of the Scientific Committee, made up of seven local and national experts.
The mission of the Honorary Committee will be to define and implement the program for celebrating half a century of freedom and democracy in Portugal and to contribute to the list of activities that aims to honour memory, involve the generations born after 1974 and integrate the entire municipality in a multifaceted way, reinforcing the values of democracy and promoting political and social participation.
The municipal commemorations kick off this week with the colloquium "From Famalicão to the World: April 25, 1974 - The Meaning of a Historic Date in Vila Nova de Famalicão", which will take place on November 10 and 11 in the auditorium of the Camilo Castelo Branco Municipal Library, with registration required through the municipality's website at www.famalicao.pt.
There will be two days of lectures and debates featuring more than a dozen speakers, including the Deputy Executive Commissioner of the "50 years of April 25" Commemorations, João Faria.
Also noteworthy is the opening of the exhibition "April 25, 1974. Thursday", scheduled for this Saturday, November 11, at 4:30 p.m., in the Praça - Mercado Municipal de Famalicão. The photographic exhibition, by Alfredo Cunha, is made up of pictures taken on the day the Carnation Revolution took place, when he was still a young amateur photographer. The exhibition will be open until May 30, 2024.
The municipal program being prepared for next year, in conjunction with the national commission, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the conquest of freedom by highlighting the most significant moments in the process that led to democratic consolidation.
